7DeputyDirectoroftheSophiaUniversityCareerCenter.AftergraduatingfromtheFacultyofHumanitiesofSophiaUniversityandmajoringinHistory,shejoinedtheSophiaSchoolCorporationasanemployeeoftheCenterforStudentAffairs.ShewasappointedDeputyDirectoroftheCareerCenterinJuly2021,afterservingasteamleaderintheOfficeforthePromotionofInnovationandDeputyDirectoroftheOfficeofLanguageEducation.When I was strugglingto juggle my timeIhavelovedbookseversinceIwasachild.Iwasthetypethatwouldgotothehousesoffriendstoplay,andendupsittingandreadinginfrontofthebookshelf.Asauniversitystudent,Iworkedpart-timeinthelibraryofanotheruniversitywhileworkingtowardsattainingmylibrariancertification,butIwassomewhatapatheticwhenitcametolookingforapost-graduationjob.Inthosedays,accordingtotherecruitmentguidelinesofthetime,thefirstdayofAugustwastheearliestdatewhenonecouldbeginlooking.OnthatdayIpaidmyfirstvisittotheCareerCenterinordertolookatjobpostings,butithappenedtobeaSaturdayandsothecounterwasclosed.Irecallponderingslowlytomyselfonmywayhome,“WhywastheCareerCenterclosedonthefirstdayofthejobhuntingseason?”Inthosedays,recruitmentrulesforuniversitystudentswereamereformality(asmostpeoplearoundmehadalreadyreceivedinformaljoboffersfromcompanies).Fortunatelyhowevertheuniversitiescompliedwiththoseruleswhenhiringgraduates,andsoIwasstillabletocommencemyjobhuntingatthatlatedate.IchoseSophiaasmyplaceofemploymentpartlybecauseitwasmyalmamater,butalsobecauseIhadheardanunsubstantiatedrumorthatthelibrary,whichhadrecentlybeenrebuiltandwasmuchlarger,wasgoingtoincreaseitsstaff.Naturally,Irecalledmyexperienceasapart-timelibrarian,theonlythinginwhichIhadexertedagreatdealofeffortwhileatschool,andaffirmedthatIwishedtobealibrarian.FortunatelyIreceivedanunofficialjoboffer,andrumorsreachedmethat4ofthe11studentshiredwereassignedtothelibrary,butIwasnotoneofthem.Mypart-timejobexperienceandqualificationwithregardtothelibraryhadfailedme!IwasappointedinchargeofextracurricularactivitiesattheCenterforStudentAffairs,andtwomonthslaterIfoundmyselfshoulder-to-shoulderwithstudentsattheannualathleticmeetbetweenSophiaandNanzanUniversity,singingcheers.Itwasanunexpectedcommencementofmyworkingcareer.*IgavebirthtomyfirstchildwhileIwasinthethirddepartmentIwasassignedto,andmysecondchildinthefourthdepartment,withouthoweverbeingassignedtothelibrary.Ibecameateamleader(thepositionislikeaPlayer-Coachinsportteam)whenmyyoungestwasinnurseryschool.Teamleadersaresaidtobe“playingmanagers.”However,sinceIwasinvestingallmyeffortsintogettingoffworkontime,andthattooinadepartmentwhereintherewasanawfullotofovertimework,mypleastomysuperiorsthatIcouldnotdomanagementaswell,werenottakenseriously.ThereasonwhytheywerenottakenseriouslymayhavebeenbecauseIhadeithersaiditthewrongway,orperhapsIhadnotsoundedseriousenough.WhatIStroveforWhileinSchoolandintheCourseofMyCareerTheChallengingandRewardingAspectsofBeingaLeaderFromYoko AKIBAIn These Ever-Changing Times
