Ithoughttomyselfthatthismustbewhatitmeanstohaveamajorityprivilege.Inotherwords,Iwasautomaticallytrusted,perceivedinafavorablelight,andgiventhebenefitofthedoubt.Iwastalkingtooneofmystudentswhosaidtome,“Iamnotleadershipmaterial,andsoIthinkI’mbettersuitedtojobswhereIsupportothersfromthesidelines.”WhenIheardthat,IrealizedthatitwasexactlyhowIusedtothinkatonepointinmylife,andIthoughtitashamethatsuchstudents,whoIthoughtwerebrilliant,closedthedoorsonthemselvesbeforetheyeventookonanychallenge.Today,Ibelieveleadershipisaqualityanyonecanacquireiftheyjustgainenoughexperience.Forwomentogetthatexperience,effortshavetobemadetogivethemopportunitiestobeleaders.TheAmericanpoliticianStacyAbrams—whoIrespectimmensely—wroteinherbook,LeadfromtheOutside,“Aleaderevolvesfromagoodpersonwhoiswillingtomakehardchoicesandhandletheconsequences.”WhenIreadthosewords,IthoughtIwantedtobecomesuchaleader.Abramssaysthatinordertobecomealeader,youhavetoovercomethehurdleofyourinternalfear—fearofinadequacy,fearofdisappointingothers,fearoffailing.Fearisyourgreatestenemy.Itgivesyoureasonstostopmoving,anditparalyzesyou.Youmightaskyourself,“HowcanIavoidbeingcrushedbythevoiceinsidemethatsays,‘There’snowayIcandoit,’andthevoicesallaroundmetellingmetostopsoIcanavoidgettinghurt?”Shewritesthatyoumustfindthecouragetoignorethefearinyourheart.Actually,everytimeIfindmyselfinaleadershipposition,ithasbeenanongoingbattlewithmyfearandmylackofconfidence.However,anyonecancapitalizeontheirindividualstrengths.Forexample,Igreatlyenjoytheprocessoftalkingtopeopleandcomingtoamutualagreementinthediscussion,andforgingrelationships.IcametorealizethatthetimeIspentinsuchawaywaspricelesstome.So,IthinkI’mthetypeofleaderwhoenjoysworkingtogethertowardsacommongoal,andwhoisenergizedbytheseconnectionsImakewithothermembers.Mygo-tomethodofstressreleaseisnevertokeepsomethingbottledupinsideme,buttotalkitoutwithtrustedfriends.It’simportanttoletotherpeoplehelpyou.Ioftenfindmyselfimmediatelyfeelingsomuchlighter,aftertalkingthingsthroughwiththem.Ialsotrytobeawareofmybreath.Mymasseuseoncepointedoutthatmybreathingwasshallow,whichcamefrombreathingusingmostlymychest.Ifoundmyselfabreathingadvisorwhocoachedmeonhowtodoabdominalbreathing,whichusesmydiaphragm.NomatterhowbusyIam,Itake5minuteseverymorningtodoconsciousbreathing.I’mlearningtopayattentiontohowI’mbreathing,andfeelthatIamlearningtobemoreawareofwherethetensionslieinmybody,andlearningtorelaxmoreeasily.Whoknewhowmuch5minutesofbreathingadaycandotoimproveyourhealth!Irecommendeveryonetotryit!Toreceiveaqualityeducationisaprivilege.Trytobethetypeofleaderwhounderstandsandusesthatprivilegefortheadvancementnotonlyofthemselvesbutofothersinsocietyaswell,andtodismantlesocietalinequities.InvitingmyprofessorsfromUSAtothe2017SophiaSymposium10ReducingStressandTryingaChangeofPaceAMessagefortheNextGeneration
