ThemostsignificantchangewasamarkedincreaseintheopportunitiesIhadtoassociatewithnumerousmembersofthestaff.Beforetakingontheseposts,Ihadonlyinteractedwiththestaffofalimitednumberofdivisions,chieflywithinthecontextofinternaluniversityproceduresandsimilarprocesses.Whileuniversitybureaucracydiffersateachinstitution,andIimaginethisisalsotrueofrelationshipsexistingbetweenfacultyandstaffwithinanygivenuniversity,Ilearnedthatthestaffhavetheirownuniqueroutines,rules,andorganizationalstructures,andthatcoordinationbetweenthefacultyandstaff,withthefacultyrespectingthoseuniquefeatures,isvital.SincebecomingDeanoftheFaculty,Ihavetakenpartinexecutivemeetings,talkswithourexecutives,andsimilarevents,andIdosometimesexperiencethefeelingofbeingunderpressure.However,Ithinkthisisaninalienablepartofuniversityadministration.Atthesametimethough,Ihavenoticedthattherearealsoareasforimprovement,regardingmutualcommunicationbetweenmembersofthefacultyandstaff.Todate,Ihavefacedmyownfairshareoffailuresinthisarea,duetoalackofunderstandingandmakingassumptions.Amongtheuniversity’sdiverseneedsasanactivesiteofeducationandresearch,IhavealsograduallybecomeawareofthingsIsuspectshouldreceivemorerecognitionwithintheschoolcorporation.TheseareareaswhereIfelttheretrulyexistedalackofmutualempathyamongfacultymembers,communicationhurdlescausedbythesectionalismofdivisionsandotherfactors.DuringmytwoyearsaschairpersonoftheGraduatePrograminAreaStudies,whichhappenedtobemyfirstexperienceofamanagementrole,Ihadmyhandsfulljustinarrangingagendasandmaterialsforourregularmeetings,withtheguidanceoftheofficestaff.ItwasoncomingtotheendofmyterminthisofficethatIgrewawareofthefactthatgraduateandundergraduateschooldecisionscirculatethroughmanydivisions.Theygothroughapprovalinseveralexecutivemeetingsbeforetheirfinalratification,allwithintheacademiccalendar.Iregardthisroleasanopportunitythatenabledmetoobjectivelyperceive,thatalltheresearchandteachingactivitiesIhadundertakensofar,hadbeenbackedbytheinvolvementofdiversepeoplewithintheuniversityorganization.Ihaveacceptedtherolesrequiredbythesituationathandlesswithanotionofmyselfasaleader,thanasacoordinator.Neverthelesshowever,whenIwasinvolvedinaprojectcommemoratingthe50thanniversaryofthefoundingoftheIbero-AmericanInstituteduringmyterminofficeasitsDirector,IfeltthatasrepresentativeoftheInstituteIhadtomaintainandfurthertherelationshipsbuiltupbothwithinandbeyondtheInstitutebyearlierDirectors,andparticularlybythelateFatherAndrade,andIworkedwithgreatearnestnesstowardsthisgoal.Inordertoensurethatwesuccessfullycarriedoutourcommemorativeproject,thenumerousdiscussionsIhadwithprofessorswhomadeuptheInstitute’smembershipaswellasthestaff,areafondmemoryformetoday.11DeanoftheFacultyofForeignStudiesofSophiaUniversity(-March2023)andProfessorofHispanicStudies.ShereceivedherM.A.fromtheUniversityofTsukubaandPh.D.inGeographyfromUniversityCollegeLondon(UCL).Herresearchinterestshavebeenonsocialmovements,communityorganizationinareasofconflict,andsolidarityeconomyinLatinAmerica,withaspecialfocusonColombia(SouthAmerica).ThingsIBecameAwareofthroughMyExperienceinExecutiveRolesTheChallengingandRewardingAspectsofBeingaLeaderFromNoriko HATAYAA Society Running on Connections between People
