IhavebeencurioussinceIwasachild,andthereareeversomanythingsIwanttotryformyself.Ihaven’tnecessarilybeenabletoboastofhavingspecificskillsinconcentrationortakingactionquickly,butifIwantsomethingorifsomethinghappenstointerestme,Idon’tquituntilIsucceedinacquiringit.Havinggraduatedfromanall-girlshighschool,IenteredtheDepartmentofMechanicalEngineering,andwassuddenlytheonlygirlinanall-boysschool.Ididfeellostandanxious,butIgraduallysettledinandmanagedtoembracetheenvironment.WhenIwasastudent,therewasanagegapbetweenmyfellowstudents,allofwhomwerearoundthesameageasmyself,andourteachers.HoweveronceIjoinedtheworkforceIcameintocontactwithawiderangeofpeople,ofdifferinggenerationsandranks.ThismeantIfacedpowerdynamicsandunfairincidents,andthereweretimeswhenIfeltresentfulandstressed,butthisdidnotmeanIthoughtofquittingthecompany.AtthattimeIreceivedacertainamountofattentionasawomaninthefirstcohorthiredafterthepassingoftheEqualEmploymentAct,andmyattitudeaffirmedthefactthat“perseveranceprevails.”So,IfeltasthoughitwentwithoutsayingthatIwouldnotgiveupmywork.AtthesametimethoughIhadalmostnoneofthechancesofferedtomymalecolleagues,suchastalkingaboutworkwithoursuperiorsoverdrinks.IturnedtoJapanesetranslationsofbooksdealingwithissuessuchasthemeaningofwork,howtobehavewithinyourorganization,andbusinesssimulationgames,andgainedalotfromthem.AftertheenvironmentchangedIspentmyadultlifebeingawardedtheepithet“first.”Thatistosay,“thefirstwomantodosuch-and-suchathing.”IcametothinkthatIcouldtrydoingthingsmyway,andIstartedtoenjoyit.WhenIlookback,IthinkIhadanunderlyingsenseofthis,possiblybecauseIattendedaChristianpre-schoolwhenIwasveryyoung.IfeltIhadbeenbroughtintothisworldandhadsomesortofroletoplay,soIdecidedtogiveitashot.WhenIcameintomyfirstmanagementrole,Iworriedaboutwhatmyownleadershipstylewouldlooklike,becauseIwastheonlywomanaroundandIhadthefeelingthatevenifIimitatedthemenwiththeirratherdirectiveordrivingapproach,myresultswouldbelukewarm.IalsorememberanoccasionwhenIwascomplainingaboutthenewmembersoftheteamnotworkingwell,andanothermemberoftheteamtoldmeoffforunfairlyjudgingtheirabilitiesonthebasisofwhereIwasmyselfatthattime,whichgavemealottothinkabout.Then,asIreadandlistenedtovariouspeople,myownleadershipstylebegantotakeconcreteshape.Iwantedtobearinmindthebalancedexecutionofthetwinpillarsofindividualgrowthandthepotentialforthistocreatevaluewhichwouldbereflectedinourbusiness,andwhenIheardaboutaninterpretationofthecomponentsoftheJapanesecharacter“志”(meaning“aim”or“aspiration”)as“havingthementalandemotionalcapacitythatallowedonepersontoholduptenothers,”Idecidedtomakethismygoal.17DirectorofboththeDaiNipponPrintingCo.Ltd.andtheTokaiRikaCo.Ltd.ShereceivedherM.Eng.fromtheGraduateSchoolofScienceandTechnologyofSophiaUniversity,beforegoingontoworkattheDaiNipponPrintingCompany.Atthecompany’sHeadOfficeshegainedexperienceinawiderangeofareas,fromthedepartmentofresearchanddevelopmenttothedepartmentfornewbusinessdevelopment,aswellasthedepartmentforrecruitingandtraining.TheMotivationtoPursueaCareerTheChallengingandRewardingAspectsofBeingaLeaderFromMinakoMIYAMALet’s Play the Music of the New World!
