InresponsetothesetrendstheBureauofStudentAffairshascarriedoutavarietyofmeasures,suchastryingtoofferonlineconsultationsinadditiontotakingstudentinquiriesface-to-face,andmakingcollegelifeorientationforincomingfirst-yearstudentsavailableonanon-demandbasis.Weareseeingsomepositiveresultsfromthesemeasures.Wemustalwaysconsidertheissueastohowfarweshouldpursuestudentconvenience,butbygoingforwardIhopetocontinueplanningactivitiesadaptedtostudents’needs,withaperceptionoftheirviewsandtherealitiesoftheirlives.Despitethesehurdles,onseeingformyselfamidstmydailyworktheextentoftheawarenessofsocialissuesthestudentsofSophiahave,theirspiritofrespectforothers,andtheirwillingnesstocooperate,Ifeelhappy.Ialsohaveagenuinefeelingthattheactivismofstudentsintakingastandforothersandtheglobalenvironment,ishavinganovelimpactthatdrawsinpeoplefrombothwithinandbeyondtheuniversity.Onseeingourcurrentproblems,thesestudentsdonotstopatcomplaintsandobjections.Rather,theyforgeaheadtoconsiderandimplementwaysofimprovingthings.Ithinkitgoodtofollowtheirenergeticandperceptiveexample,whichallowsthemtoenjoythemselvesastheytakeaction.Ihaveneverhadapropensitytowardsgettingtoostressed.Evenwithouttakinganyspecialsteps,proceedingwithmyownresearchprovidedmewithtimetofocusonotherthings,andthisperhapspermittedmetosustainmymentalequilibrium.Attimeswhenthingsgetdifficultbothwithregardtomyresearchandothertasks,Imakeeffortstorecallthattherearesuretobenewdiscoveriesawaitingme,onceIovercomethecurrentproblemsIamfacedwith.AtsomepointinthepastwhenIfeltbadaboutsomethingIbeganaskingmyself,“IsthisanissueIwillstillbeconcernedaboutonmydeathbed?”Inmostcasestheanswertothatquerywasinthenegative,andsoIdidnotallowthoseissuestoexcessivelybotherme.Whenpeopleareaskedtotakeupaleadershippositionintheirworkplaceorelsewhere,Ithinkmanyhesitatebecausetheyassumetheylacktherequiredlevelofability.However,justasitisnotmerelystarathleteswhobecomeexcellentcoaches,soalsothefactthatonehasbetterskillsdoesnotmeanonewillbeabetterleader.Inmanagementteams,strengthsandweaknessesmustbebalancedacrossmultipleindividuals,andtherequiredleadershipmodelswillalsochangedependingontheorganization’ssituationandotherfactors.Thismeansthefactofbeingnominatedforleadership,isasignthatyourcredentialsanddistinctivequalitieshavebeenjudgednecessarytotheorganizationinitspresentstate.Greatleadersarenotborntothejob.Ifyouplaytherolerequiredofyouseriously,thepeoplearoundyoualsoarelikelyhelpyoutodevelop.Iurgethenextgenerationnottoworrytoomuch,buttotakeuptheirplacesinthenewarenas.AtaCOVID-19supportactivitytodeliveragriculturalproducts,July2021.20ReducingStressandTryingaChangeofPaceAMessagefortheNextGeneration
