ofdiversevaluesandsituationswhoworktogether,toshareacommondirectionandmindset.Addedtothisistheexecutionoftheorganization’smission,andinsituationswhereyoumaydesiretoshowunderstandingasanindividualbutwhereyouarecompelledtosaynoasanarmoftheorganization,difficultiescanarisebetweenleadersasindividuals,andtheirrolesintheorganization.Conversely,therearealsocaseswhereinyouneedtoopposetheorganizationinordertoprotectyourstaff,andherealsodifficultiescanarisebetweenindividualleaders,theirstaff,andtheirorganizations.The“incident”thatleftthemostprofoundimpressiononmepersonallyoccurredjustafterIhadacceptedmymanagementposition,whenIallowedmyteammemberstoworkoneafteranothertothepointofillness,inthecourseofdemandingworkfromthemtowardsthelaunchingofanewventure.Wecouldn’tstopworking,Icouldn’tretainmypersonnel,mystaffwereburningout,andthefactthatthiswastheoutcomeofmyowninadequatecapabilityandpreparation,remainsapainfulmemoryformetoday.However,thankstothemassivesupportIreceivedfrompeopleofotherdivisions,includingmanagerswhoactedasintermediariesincoordinatingwithotherdivisionsandwhoneverthelesslentustheirsupport,andalsotheDeanofourofficewhotookthedecisiontoreduceourworkload,Iwasabletoovercomeeventhisworst-caseset-back.Whathelpedmethemostwastolearnfromcolleagueswhohadfallenill,thatnotwithstandingthefactthattheexperiencehadbeenincrediblytryingforthem,theyhadnonethelessenjoyedit.AlthoughIshallneverforgettheweightypricethathadtobepaid,yetthefactthatIwasabletomaintainapositiverelationshipwithalleveninthemidstofthatgruelingwork,andthefactthatthenewventureweestablishedatthetimeistodaybecomingaleadingprogramandhallmarkoftheorganization,indicatedthefactthatthiswasaprojectIcouldbeproudtoleavebehindasmylegacy.WhenIwasinmytwenties,Idiscoveredthattovoluntarilywatchandlistentosadmoviesandmusicandhaveagoodcry,wasaneffectivemethod.Inmythirties,sleepingandenjoyingidlechatswithpeoplemademefeeltotallyatease,andbecamemywayofrelaxing.WhenIhadalittletimetospare,IenjoyedplanningtripstoplacesIdefinitelywantedtovisitduringmylifetime.RecentlyhoweverIhavebecomemuchmoresubdued,andsojustwatchinganimalvideosorlisteningtomusic,servesasachangeofpace.WhenIfirstbecameemployedIcouldonlytakeonasmallamountofwork,andsoIveryquicklyreachedmymaximumcapacity.IcanonlyfeelapologeticnowabouttheamountofhelpIactuallyreceivedfromcolleaguesandseniormembersofthestaff.NowthatImyselfamplayingtheroleoftheseniorstaffmember,Ihavecometorealizethatitisvitalnottokeepallthestresstooneself.Weneedtogetitout,evenifthismightcausesomeinconvenience.People’swaysofthinkingandvalueschangewiththetimes.Iampainfullyawareofthefactthatinthepastfewyearsinparticular,theworldhasexperiencedanunprecedentedcrisisintheformoftheglobalCOVID-19pandemic,andoursocietiesandwaysofthinkinghavechangedsignificantly.Furthermore,inthenext20to30years,Japanislikelytowitnessrapidchangesintheformsoftheobjectsandprocessesweseetoday,withtheaccelerationofourdecliningbirthrate,agingofourpopulation,advancesinAI,theeverydayconcernsofglobalization,andotherfactors.Isuspectmembersoftheyoungergenerationwhowillshapeourfuturesocietiesarefacingagreatdealofuncertainty,notknowingwhatthefutureholds,andunsureastothedirectiontheyshouldtake.Yet,changeisbynomeansanegativething,foritcanalsoactasadoorwayleadingtonewworlds.Ihopeallofuslivinginthiscurrentmomentwillprioritizeourperceptionsaccordingtoourownideaswithoutgettingcaughtupinthepast,andcreateandtransformournewworldinpositiveways.At the farewell party in November 202222ReducingStressandTryingaChangeofPaceAMessagefortheNextGeneration
