Iexperiencedtheresultsoftheseeffortswhenanewhigh-pricedproductforwhichIhadledthedevelopment,becameasuccess.Whenthepremiumizationstrategygainedthesupportofdistributors,theSalesDivisionbegantosellthesehigher-pricedproductswithconfidence,andtheResearchandDevelopmentDivisionandMarketingDivisionbeganfocusingonplanninganddevelopingpremiumproductsinallcategories.Oncethisvirtuouscyclebegan,front-lineemployeesinthefieldbegantoproposemeasuresaftermeasuresontheirownforimprovingvalue,withoutanytop-downinstructions.AllmyhardworkpaidoffandIfeltagreatsenseofaccomplishment.“Unlessyoushowthem,tellthem,letthemtry,andpraisethem,peoplewillnottakeaction.”ThisfamousquotebyIsorokuYamamotoisverytrue.Employeeswillnotfollowyouifyoujustgivethemverbalinstructions.Irealizedthatthisiswhatitmeanttomovepeopleasaleader.Duringspringbreakofmysecondyearattheuniversity,Iparticipatedinacross-facultyandcross-yearprogramtravelcamptoCanada,theUnitedStatesandEurope,andexperiencedoverseaslifeforthefirsttime.Fascinatedbydifferentculturesandinspiredbyadiversityofpeople,travelingbecameasourceofself-developmentforme,andtothisdayIhavetakenmanytrips.ThepeopleImeetonmytravelsaren’tconcernedwithmybackgroundorwhatIdo;theyaresimplydealingwithmeasafellowhumanbeing.Thishuman-to-humancommunicationthattranscendsrace,culture,andoccupationmakesmeawareofmytruenature,andIrediscovermyself.ThatisthereasonwhyIgoontripswheneverIfindmyselfatastandstillatwork,orwhenIhesitateaboutsomething.BythetimeIreturnIusuallyfindthatmymindisclear,mythoughtsareorganized,andmypettyworrieshavevanishedintothinair.Ialsousedtothinkthesameway,butmanypeoplebelievethatleadershipisaspecialtalentthatonlycertainpeoplehave,andsoIthinktheyendupwaitingforacharismaticleaderwithoutraisingtheirownhands.However,anyonewhoshowsthedirectiontoproceed,passionatelytalksaboutone’sowndreamstowardsuccessandmovesanorganizationtoaction,isaleader.Onlyonethingisrequired—thecouragetolead.Thestartingpointistofindsomethingthatyoucanbepassionateaboutthroughoutyourlife,andinmycase,itisto“enrichone’slife.”Whetherit’stheluxurybrandIusedtoworkfororS.TCORPORATION,amanufacturerofdailyuseitems(FMCG),theideaofenrichingone’slifehasremainedthesame.Iwouldlikeyoualltoaimtobeleadersinafieldthatyouarepassionateabout.Byallmeans,havethecouragetolead!At the 36th Corporate Public Relations Executive Award Ceremony28TravelMakesMeConfrontMyselfHavetheCouragetoLead
