Tobeginwith,therearepracticaldifficultiesinsteeringwithoutanykindofpreparation.IntheMeijiperiod,inordertorunauniversity,inadditiontoresearchandeducationacademicsbynecessityhadtobeknowledgeableaboutandinvolvedinpolitics,economics,andgovernance,butcontemporaryscholarsandresearchersarenottrainedfororexperiencedinmanagingauniversity.Manyarethrownintoleadershipwithoutanypreparation,anditislikebeingaskedtosteerashipwithoutpriorknowledgeofitsstructureornavigation.Ifthelessonsofleadershiparepassedonresponsibly,thenthevoyagewillbelesstumultuous.Thereareveryfewfemalerolemodelsandleaders,sowomenhavetoexperienceagreatdealoftrial-and-errorindoingajobwell.NotjustinJapanbutallovertheworld,manypeopleareboundbythestereotypeofmaleleaders.Whilemaleleadersareevaluatedpositivelywithwordssuchas“decisive,”“assertive,”and“reliable,”womenleaderswhomakesimilardecisionsortakesimilaractionsareoftenjudgednegativelyas“authoritarian,bossy,aggressive,”and“conservative.”Unfortunately,thebiasestowardsandstringentappraisalsofwomenleadersexisteverywhere,bothinthepastandpresent.Henceitisvitaltochangethegeneralmindsetinthesubconsciousassumptionsandprejudicesofpeopletowardwomenleaders.Therearemanygoodthingsaswell.Tobetrusted,tested,andovercomedifficultiesinservingothersareallchallengesthatcontributetomypersonalgrowth,andtheymakemyworkworthwhile.Ialsoenjoyworkingwithmembersofthestaffandfacultywhosharecommonvalues.Theworkofascholarissolitary,butworkingwithothersintheuniversitycreatesasenseofsolidarityandcompanionship.Ithinkclassifyingtimereallyhelps.Workingtimecanbedividedintoteaching,awholesomebalanceisimportant.Ialsotrytosecuretimeformyfamily,formyself,toplay,andtorestinordertomaintainphysicalandmentalhealth.WhenIamstuck,criticized,orwhenIstumble,Istepbacktotakestockoftheissuesandmyfeelings,beforeIrestart.WhenImakeamistake,Ireflectonitandapologize.Nomatterhowdifficultthingsare,Ithinkofmyfamilyandpeoplewhoarebehindme,andIalwaysspringbacktolife.HowdoIrefreshmyself?WhenItakeawalkoutsidewithmybeloveddogCharlie,allmystressandworriesflytothewind.research,andadministration,Letamyriadwhiteflowersbloominthefieldofblue!Iwouldbedelightedtocontinuestrivingforgenderbalanceamongtheleadershipinacademia.Womendonothavetobelikemeninordertobecomeleaders.Itwouldbebetterformorementobecomelikewomen,ratherthanforwomentobecomelikemen.Thatismymodestwishforabetterworld.andmaintainingTaking a walk with Charlie30TheHardshipsandRewardsofBecomingaWomanLeaderReducingStressandTryingaChangeofPaceAMessagefortheNextGeneration
