TheRoleModelSeriesoftheSophiaSchoolCorporationhasreachedits12thedition.Thisserieswasplannedandissuedatthecommencementoftheacademicyearof2011bytheOfficeforthePromotionofGenderEquality,whichhappenstobetheforerunnerofourOfficeforthePromotionofDiversity.Itwasoriginallypublishedunderthetitle,“SophiaUniversityFemaleResearchersRoleModel,”aspartofaprogramtosupportfemaleresearchers,withitsfirstthreeissueshavingthesubtitle,“MyLifeJourneyasaResearcher.”Itstillconstitutesverystimulatingreadingtoday.Itpermitsusaglimpseintothevariousattitudestheseprofessorshadtowardslife,allofwhomstruggledandtoiledhardincarvingouttheiruniquepathsasresearchers.Ihopetoseeourpresent-daystudentsexploringthesepamphlets.TheOfficeforthePromotionofDiversityundertookthepublicationoftheseriesfromIssue7onwards,andithasmaintainedituntiltoday.SincetakingonourcurrentmissionastheOfficeforthePromotionofDiversity,wehavebeendevelopingtheseriessoastofocusontheteachingstaffandgraduates,thosewhoeithercurrentlyorearlierwereactiveinamultiplicityoffields,adoptingastheirguidingprincipletheaxiom,“forOthers,withOthers.”Wewelcomedtheinvolvementofbothstudentsandstaffmembersinthisissue,anditismyhopethatthisservesasameanstocarryforwardthespiritofSophiaUniversity.This12theditionoftheseriesonceagainhighlightswomen,andspecificallywomenasleaders.ThisisduetothefactthattheystillconstituteararityinJapan,andheadingourlistisProfessorSadakoOgata.WhenIwasastudentmyselftherewerealreadynumerousladiesamongthemembersoftheteachingstaffatSophiaUniversity,andtheywerelookeduptoverymuchbythestudents.ProfessorSadakoOgatawasattheapexofthislist.ProfessorsYorikoMeguroandKazukoTsurumiwerealsoimpressive,bothwithregardtotheirresearchandteaching.Theyseemedtoenjoyshowcasingtheirindividualitywiththeirpersonalstylesandtheywerepopularacrossgenderlines,andthismademethinkthatwealsoneedtolookatthemilieusurroundingthesesuccessfulladiesamongtheteachingstaff.Frommystudentdaysuntilnow,noneincludingtheprofessorshaveeverdiscouragedmefromspeakingoutorputtingmyselfforward,andIdon’tthinkIhaveeverbeenforcefullyremindedofmygenderinthecourseofmywork.Itmighthavebeensimplyaquestionofluck,butmyexperienceofSophiaUniversityisthatitisauniversitywherespeakingfreelyengendersthepossibilityofdiscussion,regardlessofaperson’sgender,rank,orjobcategory.Ithinkthisishowitoughttobe,andIhopeweremainthisway.Wefaceexternalpressuresthatneedtobeeliminated,buteachofusalsohascertaininternalizedbarriers,thattendtoholdusback.IhopethisRoleModelSerieswillassistintheremovalofthesebarriers.2KyokoYOKOYAMADirector of the Office for the Promotion of Diversity anda Professor of the Faculty of Human Sciences of Sophia UniversityLet’s Remove the Internalized BarriersWe Carry within Ourselves
