⚫Symposium:FosteringGlobalCitizenship,Dai-ichisubcommittee,“Whatisacosmopolitan?”5SadakoOgataservedaspresidentoftheStudentGovernmentAssociationthatMotherBrittfounded.MotherBrittbelieveditvitalforstudentstodothingsontheirown,tellingthem,“taketheinitiativeintheassociationandorganizethingsyourselves,”and“considertakingmoreessentialinitiativestoengageinsocialactivitieswhilegainingvariousexperiencesinyourschoollives.”Heroutlookofcomingupwithideasanddiscussinganddecidingthingstogether,seemstohaveitsoriginsinMotherBritt’swords.Behindherachievementsasaworldleaderwerethewordsandwaysoflivingofthoseclosetoher.Herapproachtolifewasbuiltonsolidfoundationsandconvictions,andherdecisivenessasaleaderandheranalyticalapproachwithafield-basedfocus,seemtosharemanysimilaritieswiththequalitiesofherfatherandMotherBritt.Sheassimilatedherstudentexperiencesandthethinkingofthosearoundher,andtransformedthemintoherownpotencies.Ifeelthisservedtobuildupherleadership.Asminister,orNo.2officer,inhercountry’s30-membermissiontotheUnitedNations,the48-year-oldMrs.OgatanotonlywillrepresentJapanbeforeamajorworldforumbutwillalsobecloselywatchedbythe56millionotherwomenofJapanwhoonlyrecentlyhavesensedaspiritofliberation.(TheNewYorkTimes.April2,1976)Eversincethattimeshehasbeenaninspirationtowomen.TheabovepassageappearedintheNewYorkTimes,onherappointmentasministerofJapan’smissiontotheUnitedNations.Sheworkedinanavantgardemannerwithintheworldwidebureaucracy,whichatthetimewasdominatedbymen.Weperceivethatshelaidsignificanceonlife,andnotonhierarchismormanagerialism.Thereasonforherpopularitywasnotjustbecauseofherstrongworkethic,butalsobecauseofherfriendlywavingofhands,herengagingsmiles,andherattentiontodetail.Shewasnotconcernedaboutbeingawoman.Rather,shebelievedthekeytoovercomingthedisadvantagesfacedbywomenenteringtheworkforce,wastomasterthefactofbeingnaturallyoneself.Althoughmenandwomenwereondifferentcycles,yetwhentheirliveswereconsideredintotal,theywerethesame.Assherosetoprominence,manywomenyearnedtobelikeherinbalancingfamilylifeandwork.However,shesaidthatwiththegradualdiversificationofoccupationsandcareerchoicesforwomen,thekeytohavingasuccessfulcareerandfamilywastoseizeafittingmomentwithoutrushing.Lookingbackonherownlife,shenoted,“IwasdoingwhatIlikedwithinmycapacity,anditgraduallygainedmomentum.”SheleftthesewordsforthenextgenerationofSophians.(May14–16,1980).“Tobenon-discriminatorytowardsforeignpeopleandtheirmindset,isthetoppriorityforbeingaglobalcitizen.”“Nocountrycanexistalonetoday.ItisoururgentmissiontoliberateoursocietybyfosteringJapanesecitizenswhofirstconditionforbeingcosmopolitan.”Giving a lecture to students at Sophia UniversityTheAspirationsofWomenBeaCosmopolitanHashino
