Childcare Grant for Academic Conference Participants (2019)

 As part of its support program to help realize research work-childcare balance, the Sophia School Corporation started the “Childcare Grant for Academic Conference Participants” system in academic year 2017.
 The details for academic year 2019 are as follows:

1.Purpose

Such life events as childbirth and childcare have a significant influence on research activities. In consideration of the possible influence of research discontinuation and delay in academic society participation and activities on a researcher’s career, the system aims to provide support by offering a grant to researchers who participate in academic conferences held at the School, to cover part of nursery costs.

2.Eligible academic conferences

Academic conferences held on the School premises, for which a full-time faculty member of the Sophia School Corporation serves as the organizer or is directly engaged in planning and operation, and where nursery care is offered using the School’s facilities.

3.Eligibility for nursery care

In principle, healthy children from 57 days old to the third grade of elementary school of researchers (including those from outside the School) who are participating in an academic conference held on the School premises.

4.Grant

A maximum grant of \50,000 is offered for one academic conference.

5.Applicants

The School’s full-time faculty members, who serve as the organizer or are directly engaged in the planning and operation of the conference.
As the system aims to assist as many academic societies as possible, each academic society shall be limited to one grant for each academic year.

6.Application period

There are two application deadlines in one academic year: one in late April, and another one in late October.

7.Application method

To apply for “Childcare Grant for Academic Conference Participants,” please contact the Office for the Promotion of Diversity (See below).

8.Selection criteria

  1. (1) The following order of priority shall be adopted in the selection process:
    1) International academic conference
    2) National academic conference
    3) The School’ research presentation meeting, etc.
  2. (2) Support shall cover a wide range of fields, and applications from female faculty members shall be given extra consideration.
  3. (3) In the event that there are too many applicants, following the screening based on criteria (1) & (2) above, the final decision shall be made by lottery under the supervision of the Chair of the Committee for the Promotion of Diversity, the Director of the Office for the Promotion of Diversity, and multiple members of the Committee for the Promotion of Diversity.

9.Others

(1) There are two application deadlines in one academic year: one in late April, and another one in late October.

2019 spring semester (For conferences to be held this academic year)
Application period: Wednesday, April 17 to Thursday, April 25
Deadline: Thursday, April 25
Notification of results: Thursday, May 9

2019 autumn semester (For conferences to be held this academic year and the next academic year)
Application period: Wednesday, October 23 to Thursday, October 31
Deadline: Thursday, October 31
Notification of results: Wednesday, November 6
