The Maternity support and childcare

We will enable women to continue research activities by providing support through pregnancies and childrearing periods. Support will be in four areas: research support, childcare support services, support for returning to the workforce, and support for balancing work and personal life. In FY2009, the following measures will be considered and implemented. We will invite personnel from Arts as well as Sciences to share their views and experiences on starting and raising families. On the basis of the knowledge gained through discussions, we hope to assess and specify actual needs and plan to offer support that will be truly useful.

Research Support.

• Introduction of a system to hire PD and RA to assist researchers with young children.
• Preparation of IT facilities enabling researchers to undertake research activities at home.

Childcare Support Service.

• Plan and implement funding for childcare while researchers attend conferences, and so on.
• Consider making greater use of Sophia’s childcare service, Poppins.

Support for returning to the workforce.

• Plan and implementation of more flexible sabbatical leaves.

Support balancing work and personal life.

• Plan and implementation for more flexible regulations concerning the class hours and meeting hours.
• Plan and implementation of working shorter hours.

Survey on the actual needs

• Hold gatherings among women who have had experiences in balancing research careers with child raising.
